SUMMARY:Hamilton -- Straz Center\, Carol Morsani Hall
DESCRIPTION:Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is a sung-through musical based on Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton — the orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who talked his way into George Washington’s inner circle during the Revolutionary War\, became the first Treasury Secretary\, built the foundation of the American banking and credit system\, and died at 49 in a duel with the sitting Vice President\, Aaron Burr. The score moves between hip-hop\, R&B\, traditional Broadway balladry\, and British-pop pastiche\, with almost no spoken dialogue — it’s closer to a hip-hop opera than a conventional book musical. \nAct one covers the Revolutionary War years: Hamilton’s arrival in New York\, “My Shot\,” meeting Washington and the Schuyler sisters\, and his marriage to Eliza. Act two moves into the fight over the new federal government — the cabinet battles with Jefferson and Madison dramatized in “The Room Where It Happens” and the “Cabinet Battle” numbers — then the Reynolds Pamphlet affair\, the death of Hamilton’s son Philip\, and finally the duel with Burr. The cast is deliberately multiracial playing the Founding Fathers\, a choice Miranda has described as telling “America then\, as told by America now.” \nThis isn’t a new or untested title. It opened at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre on Aug. 6\, 2015\, and has run continuously there ever since — more than 11 years — while separate productions ran simultaneously in Chicago\, the West End in London since 2017\, and multiple US national tours since 2017. It swept the 2016 Tony Awards (11 wins out of 16 nominations\, including Best Musical)\, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, and took a Grammy for the cast album. Reviewing the Broadway opening for The New York Times\, critic Ben Brantley called it proof the American musical “is not only surviving but also evolving\,” writing simply: “Yes\, it really is that good.” A decade later it’s still one of the hardest tickets in touring theater. \nRuntime is roughly 2 hours 45 minutes with one intermission; it’s generally considered fine for middle-school age and up\, with some mature content (an infidelity subplot\, a graphic death by gunshot) but nothing explicit on stage. \nOne of our own has seen Hamilton twice already — once on Broadway\, once previously at the Straz — and is going back again for this run\, a third time overall and a second trip specifically to see it at this venue. Not the kind of repeat recommendation we hand out often. Their pick for best song: “You’ll Be Back\,” King George III’s breakup-letter-to-the-colonies number\, sung from the losing side of the Revolutionary War as the colonists push for independence from English rule — the show’s comic relief\, and somehow one of its catchiest songs. \nHamilton’s national tour lands at the Straz Center for a three-week run — 24 performances total\, with extra matinees added on several dates. A run this long means there’s an actual window to plan a night around it\, not just one Saturday to fight for. \nGood to know: Carol Morsani Hall\, Straz Center\, 1010 N W.C. MacInnes Pl\, Tampa\, FL 33602. Oct. 21-Nov. 8\, mostly 7:30pm evenings with some 1pm matinees on select dates. Tickets from $102. Outside Pasco County — a worth-the-drive pick. \nTickets and full schedule at the Straz Center

SUMMARY:Buccaneers vs. Falcons -- Raymond James Stadium
DESCRIPTION:The Buccaneers and Falcons have played each other since 1977\, but it didn’t become a real rivalry until both landed in the newly-formed NFC South in 2002 — and more than two decades later\, the series is still essentially a coin flip: Atlanta leads the all-time series 33-32\, with a 25-23 edge since the division was created. This one’s a division game with real playoff-seeding weight\, not a non-conference afternoon off. \nIt’s the Buccaneers’ only home game in November — an afternoon kickoff\, not a Monday nighter\, so there’s a full day built around it rather than a work-night scramble. Raymond James Stadium has family sections and kid-friendly concourse areas like any NFL stadium; it’s a long\, loud day for very young kids but a standard family outing for school-age ones. \nGood to know: Raymond James Stadium\, 4201 N Dale Mabry Hwy\, Tampa\, FL 33607. Sunday\, Nov. 1\, 1pm. Tickets through Ticketmaster\, the Buccaneers’ official marketplace\, from roughly $47 and up depending on seat. Outside Pasco County — a worth-the-drive pick. \nBuy Buccaneers Tickets

SUMMARY:Jimmy Eat World: 25 Years of Bleed American -- MIDFLORIDA Amphitheatre
DESCRIPTION:Jimmy Eat World self-financed Bleed American after Capitol Records dropped them — then the album’s second single\, “The Middle\,” hit No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the song AllMusic credits with launching mainstream emo-pop as a genre. It’s sold 1.7 million copies since 2001 and remains the band’s only Top 40 hit on the Hot 100 to date\, which makes this 25th-anniversary tour a full victory lap on the record that saved the band’s career. Hot Mulligan and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers open. \nMIDFLORIDA is Tampa Bay’s largest outdoor venue — 20\,000 capacity between pavilion seats and lawn — so a late decision usually still gets you in. It’s an all-ages general-admission lawn show\, loud and crowded but nothing objectionable on stage; fine for teens\, a long night for anyone much younger. \nGood to know: 4802 US Hwy 301 N\, Tampa\, FL 33610. Saturday\, Nov. 14\, 7pm. Tickets from around $51 through Ticketmaster. Outside Pasco County — a worth-the-drive pick. \nBuy Jimmy Eat World Tickets\nMore info: Worth the Drive — Jimmy Eat World\, UB40\, and Alice Cooper Play Tampa Bay This Fall

SUMMARY:UB40: The Unstoppable Tour -- Mahaffey Theater
DESCRIPTION:UB40 started as a group of unemployed friends in a Birmingham\, England welfare line in 1978 — the band’s name is literally the UK government’s unemployment benefit form number\, and their first album\, Signing Off\, was a pun on leaving the dole. Their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Red Red Wine” hit No. 1 in the UK in 1983\, then took five more years to top the charts in America in 1988\, a slow-burn breakthrough partly credited to a performance on a Nelson Mandela birthday TV special. Four decades and dozens of hits later\, the Unstoppable Tour is their current run through North America. \nThe Mahaffey is right on the waterfront in downtown St. Pete — an indoor\, seated show instead of an amphitheater lawn\, with the water and the downtown skyline right outside. It’s a reggae-pop show with broad\, all-ages appeal; nothing in the material or staging makes it inappropriate for families\, though it’s a late-ish 8pm start for younger kids on a school night. \nGood to know: 400 1st St. S\, St. Petersburg\, FL 33701. Saturday\, Nov. 14\, 8pm. Tickets through Ticketmaster. Outside Pasco County — a worth-the-drive pick. \nBuy UB40 Tickets\nMore info: Worth the Drive — Jimmy Eat World\, UB40\, and Alice Cooper Play Tampa Bay This Fall

SUMMARY:Cirque du Soleil: 'Twas the Night Before -- Straz Center
DESCRIPTION:One performer in ‘Twas the Night Before spins by her hair roughly 100 times at top speed — about seven rotations per second — while another duo works a strap act 20 feet above the stage and a roller-skating pair hits 30 mph in tight circles. It’s Cirque du Soleil’s first holiday-themed production\, built loosely around the Clement Clarke Moore poem rather than a traditional book musical: a family settling in for Christmas Eve becomes the frame for aerial straps\, hoop diving through stacked rings as small as 18 inches across\, hair suspension\, and a neon-diabolo number that spins lit-up tops out into the crowd. \nReviews have been mixed on whether it hits the emotional highs of Cirque’s non-holiday shows — some critics have called it a notch below the company’s best work — but the acrobatics themselves are consistently singled out as the draw\, and it’s become a recurring touring holiday staple since its 2019 debut. \nIt’s family-friendly throughout — no violence\, no mature content\, built around a Christmas story — and runs about 90 minutes\, making it an easier sit for younger kids than most touring productions. The show plays Carol Morsani Hall at the Straz Center for an 11-day run with multiple performances most days. \nGood to know: Carol Morsani Hall\, Straz Center\, 1010 N W.C. MacInnes Pl\, Tampa\, FL 33602. Nov. 18-29\, multiple showtimes daily (1pm\, 3pm\, 4pm\, 6pm\, 7:30pm depending on the date). Tickets from $116\, through Ticketmaster. \nBuy Cirque du Soleil Tickets

SUMMARY:Lightning vs. Oilers -- Benchmark International Arena
DESCRIPTION:The Lightning are one of only nine franchises in NHL history to win back-to-back Stanley Cups\, taking the 2020 and 2021 titles — the 2021 win came with goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy starting all 23 playoff games and winning the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP\, the first goalie to do that in a repeat championship run since Ken Dryden in 1978-79. The Oilers bring their own pedigree in the other direction — five Stanley Cups in the 1980s during the Wayne Gretzky/Mark Messier dynasty years — and this is Edmonton’s only Tampa Bay stop of the season\, the kind of one-shot visiting matchup that sells out faster than an ordinary weeknight game. \nIt’s a standard NHL game — physical but nothing inappropriate for kids\, and Benchmark International Arena runs the usual between-whistles kid-friendly arena entertainment. \nGood to know: Benchmark International Arena\, 401 Channelside Dr\, Tampa\, FL 33602. Thursday\, Nov. 19\, 7:30pm. Tickets through Ticketmaster. Outside Pasco County — a worth-the-drive pick. \nBuy Lightning Tickets
